Seven miles east of Winchester, Burges Field is a thirty-acre site on rolling Hampshire downland that looks south across the valley of the River Itchen. Planted in 2011 with Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay the vineyard is perfectly suited to the production of the best sparkling wines, for beneath a thin cap of gravelly clay, lies a deep layer of pure white chalk dotted with hard silica flints. The clay lets the Pinots express a fruit-laden and earthy roundness while the chalk imparts a steely, mineral structure to the Chardonnay that should ensure the wines age beautifully, growing more complex by the year.
