The Judging Panel

Co Chair: Susie Barrie MW

“We’re on the move in 2024 as we head to the idyllic Sandridge Barton Estate in Devon for the WineGB Awards judging week. As you’re aware, we’ve always been determined to keep this competition relevant, rigorous and dynamic, and to that end we also take with us some fresh faces on the judging panel and a new co-chair, Peter Richards MW, who I’m sure will be familiar to you all! What won’t change is our enthusiasm and excitement to taste and award as many of the UK’s finest wines as you give us the opportunity and privilege to. We want to see every style of wine from every size of producer in this competition, and we want to give you even more reason to shout about the wines you are most proud of.”

Co Chair: Oz Clarke OBE

“This is an exciting but challenging time for WineGB. Our vintages since 2018 have been a roller coaster, with every vintage supremely different. The challenges of years like 2021 and 2023 have demanded phenomenal
efforts from our wine producers, but created a myriad of styles that end up with us triumphantly deserving our title of ‘The Newest New World Wine Country’. And it’s these fascinating English and Welsh expressions of their place and their people that we want to see in our WineGB Awards. These are your Awards. This is your chance to shine. So, please, enter all the wines that you are proud of, and we’ll make you even prouder with a WineGB medal.”

Co Chair: Peter Richards MW

“Excited doesn’t begin to cover what I feel at joining the stellar WineGB Awards team. Privileged is more like it – to be able to work alongside top experts tasting a range of brilliant wines from all corners of England and Wales, with the aim of finding and championing the best…that’s a real treat. So my request is simple: please send in your wines! You’ve gotta be in it to win it, as they say, and as the GB wine scene evolves, we want to taste and celebrate as broad a range of wines as possible. Having compered the awards ceremony for many years, I know how much it means to win, and the benefits it can bring. And that could absolutely be you. So here’s to professionalism, ambition and excitement – and to working together to celebrate the best of English and Welsh wine.”

Matt Horsley (Buyer, The Wine Society)

Matt Hodgson (Grape Britannia)

The medal results will be announced on 20 June. Trophies will be unveiled at the WineGB Awards Celebration Lunch on 19 July at the Drapers’ Hall, London.

Nestled in a picturesque valley in the South Hams, Sandridge Barton Wines may appear to be a new face on the UK wine scene, but its Devon-based vineyards and winery have been growing grapes and making wine since 1981. Producing over 80 tonnes of fruit per year from its current 32-acre vineyards and set in a south-facing bowl overlooking the River Dart, its vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Meunier, Madeleine Angevine, Bacchus, Pinot Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc.

A unique marriage of climate, soil, and grape varieties, combined with its meticulous care, experience and winemaking skills, make Sandridge Barton one of the foremost wine producers within the UK.
