Gusbourne Estate named Winery of the Year

Gusbourne Estate moves from #2 to #1
Newcomer Sugrue leaps into the #10 spot at first attempt
Squerryes, Weyborne and Roebuck Estates are first time entrants
Hampshire and East Sussex are the lead counties with 7 wineries apiece

The Real Review has announced its 2023 Top Wineries of Great Britain report, unveiling Gusbourne as their Winery of the Year this year.

Nyetimber came second by just a whisker, as the only other UK winery to achieve an average of 94+/ 100 points.

Three wineries this year scored 93+ points, Langham Estate in Dorset, Hattingley Valley in Hampshire, and Hambledon Vineyard, also in Hampshire. All three have been knocking at the door now for some time and it would come as no surprise if one of the were to leapfrog to a top spot next year.

The expansion of the Top Wineries list from 20 to 29 this year has brought a number of new names to the party. Sugrue South Downs, owned and run by Dermot Sugrue, one of England’s most decorated winemakers, shot straight in at number 10 at his first attempt.

Also new to the party this year are Squerryes (Kent), Weyborne and Roebuck Estates (both Sussex-based).

This is now the third year since The Real Review began its in-depth analysis of the UK’s wineries in an annually updated list that aims to identify, promote and reward wine excellence.

The ranking is determined by a proprietary algorithm, which takes into account the rating and recency of reviews by The Real Review’s critic, Anthony Rose, over two years. Those producers recognised in the annual list receive a Top Wineries Certificate to showcase their standing amongst the nation’s best, representing 14% of all wineries in Great Britain.

The Real Review will be publishing further articles on English wine over the coming months. However further information on the winners and the Top Winery rankings, further reading is available on the site, including:
