Budget fails to deliver for one of Britain’s most promising rural industries

“The Government has talked extensively about economic growth, investment and supporting British business. Yet when presented with tangible, affordable measures to help one of Britain’s fastest-growing agricultural and manufacturing sectors realise its potential, it has failed to do anything for the domestic UK wine sector. Which is deeply disappointing.

“We asked for a fair deal, proportionate support and recognition of the contribution this industry already makes and the greater contribution it could make with the right backing.

“The failure to level the playing field exemplified by the £10m alcohol duty relief given to British brewers and cider makers leaves behind UK wine producers and vineyards.

“WineGB put forward clear, targeted and practical proposals: Wine Tourism Relief to unlock investment and spending in rural economies; a fairer approach to wine duty to ease pressure on producers and consumers; and reform of Small Producer Relief so that UK wine businesses are treated fairly. These were opportunities for Government to make a meaningful difference.

“The Government must now explain how it intends to turn its growth ambitions into practical action for English and Welsh wine. We stand ready to work constructively with Ministers, but warm words about growth are not enough. Our industry needs decisions, not declarations.

“English and Welsh wine has earned its place as a serious contributor to the UK economy. It is time for Government policy to catch up.”
